Crew captures third and sixth place in its return to competition at Head of the Lagoon

VALLEJO, Calif. –
Following a limited window of opportunity to practice — cadet-athletes spent the last two-and-a-half weeks prepping for competition — Cal Maritime's men's crew team returned to the water when it faced a stacked field at the Head of the Lagoon in Foster City, California.

Competing against numerous teams that began training in early September, the Keelhaulers more than held their own in this nationally renowned event, even though cadet-athletes possessed a fraction of practice time compared to their peers, in the Novice 8+ and Varsity 4+ events.

Cal Maritime's Varsity 4+ team finished sixth, beating Cal's lightweights and Chico State in the process; the Novice 8+ medaled by finishing third.

For both groups, their efforts were the best of the season, especially since both boats spent limited time together, with a novice rower needed to fill out the boat.

Having only been on the water for 2.5 weeks, the Keelhaulers braved a stacked field of boats in the Novice 8+ and Varsity 4+ event, competing against crews who have been on the water since early September!

The Varsity 4+ finished 6th, beating Cal Lightweights & Chico State! The cadets exceeded their own expectations given that they haven't had much time together and especially because the lineup included a novice rower to fill out the boat.

With their inaugural regatta of the 2023-24 season now completed, the Keelhaulers are excited to continue racing throughout the spring semester. Once set by the program, GoKeelhaulers.com will highlight the team's championship-segment schedule.
