VALLEJO, Calif. – Just over one minute after Bethesda took a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes left until halftime, a header from Noah Anderson drew the Keelhaulers even at the break.
That goal originated from an Elijah Mondragon corner kick; Jose Diaz redirected that corner toward Anderson who wasted no time in heading in Cal Maritime's first goal of the game.
Thirteen minutes into the second half, a free kick from Diaz taken just outside the penalty area gave Cal Maritime a 2-1 lead.
That advantage held until the 73rd minute when the visiting Lion Angels equalized; a hard-luck counterattack led to a penalty kick from Bethesda which ended up being the decisive goal of the game in a matchup the Keelhaulers dropped by a 3-2 score.
The unfortunate play that led to the penalty kick in the 75th minute came from a Bethesda counterattack that started with a long ball towards Cal Maritime's goal. What became a 1v1 situation led to a whistle in the box when both players involved converged towards a bouncing ball right in front of the Keelhaulers' goal.
On a true 50/50 opportunity, the referee thought too much contact took place, which led to the final goal scored by either team Friday night at Bodnar Field,
Cal Maritime will end its weekend with its first "road" game of the season against Pacific Union on Sunday. Since the Pioneers' field is unsafe for competition, PUC will host this game at Bodnar Field with the Keelhaulers as the designated road team.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
