Fast-paced first quarter, three-point shooting, featured in CSUM’s final non-conference game
ROCKLIN, Calif. – Fans who turned out to watch Cal Maritime's final non-conference road game of the season at Warrior Arena — next week's event at Pacific is an exhibition — saw a pair of teams score 50 combined points in the first quarter, a red hot Keelhauler squad that shot .467 percent from the floor and hit half of its attempts from three.
Of Cal Maritime's 21 field goals recorded throughout the night, 10 were earned from behind the arc.
"During our pregame talk, we wanted to focus on being present. Going into the game, we had a great first half, shooting above our season average as well as hitting 46 percent of our three-poing shots," said head coach Imhotet Amen-Ra.
"I absolutely loved our grit. Our competitive spirit is second to none. Every possession we fight, claw, and we support each other through everything, which is what I love."
Alicia Porter also led all Keelhaulers with 16 points, and Aysia Santos notched her sixth double-figure point total in the last seven games by adding another 10 in a game that saw Jessup pull away in the second quarter and hold a double-digit lead for the rest of the night.
By defeating CSUM, 96-60, the Warriors picked up a win in the second of a three-game homestand to push their record to 8-1, suffering its lone loss of the season last Saturday versus 21st-ranked Southern Oregon.
Cal Maritime will enter a week-long break due to finals week, once it returns to campus, at 0-8.
As was the case with head coach Amen-Ra, Lexy Wallace returned to a familiar environment since both spent time as a member of Jessup's women's basketball program. Amen-Ra served as an assistant coach for four years; Wallace redshirted last season at Jessup before transferring to Cal Maritime before the start of the 2023-24 campaign.
Wallace finished with nine points by canning three shots from three, two rebounds and a blocked shot.
"We definitely want to come out with a win so we will look at the film, find ways to tweak what we do and continue to work on ourselves to prep for Pacific and conference play," said Amen-Ra.
Women's basketball will return to action next Wednesday, tipoff in Stockton is set for 11 a.m.
