Keelhaulers continue to roll by winning fifth game in a row
VALLEJO, Calif. – By hitting four of his nine baskets from three, Amil Fields finished with a team-high 22 points, Miles Pennington and Divine Nwoko completed Cal Maritime's list of double-digit scorers by adding another 19 and 13, respectively, and led for all but one minute and 49 seconds of Sunday's Cal Pac Conference game to defeat Park Gilbert, 87-70.
By winning their second league game in as many days, and their fifth straight, the Keelhaulers will enter the last of three Cal Pac home weekend contests, in as many days, with a 6-5 overall and 2-0 league record. After Cal Maritime's 7:30 p.m. Monday night matchup versus Embry-Riddle, it will complete its inaugural conference homestand with games against Westcliff (Thursday, 7:30 p.m.) and Saint Katherine (Sunday, 3 p.m.).
Park Gilbert will continue its season with records of 4-13 and 0-1.
After Cal Maritime six of the game's first 10 points, the visiting Buccaneers enjoyed one of their few highlights of the night by scoring six unanswered points. But that advantage was short-lived because a three-pointer and layup from Nwoko, on consecutive possessions, gave his team the lead for good.
At that time, the Keelhaulers led 11-10; in the latter portion of the half, that cushion was extended to double figures when they outscored Park Gilbert, 19-5 and never looked back.
By hitting nearly half of their shots throughout the night, combined with 41 bench points, Sunday's result was truly a team victory with 14 Keelhaulers earning playing time in their blowout victory.
Responsible for nearly half of his team's offense, Erik Palmer led the Buccaneers with 31 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs.
