VALLEJO, Calif. — Election Day (and all political ads eventually disappearing for a near-two-year respite), Thanksgiving and the start of the holiday shopping season: These are a few things that many people. Across the nation, are excited for when the calendar flips to November. For Cal Maritime men's basketball fans, November is an exciting month because it marks the start of basketball season.
Even though the first game of the 2024-25 campaign will take Cal Maritime for Tuesday's Election Day exhibition at Sacramento State, the official start of the season will take place two days later when West Coast Baptist visits PEAC Main Gym for CSUM's season opener.
Fans can watch the second-ever head-to-head game against Sacramento State on ESPN+; a subscription is needed to access a video stream of this contest.
In addition to meeting the Hornets for the first time since December 10, 2011 (also played in Sacramento), Cal Maritime can play the role of spoilers since that night is the inaugural game for Sacramento State head coach Michael Czepil after spending the last two years there as an assistant coach.
Following a game that serves as Sacramento State's official season opener, CSUM will participate in its first countable game of the year when West Coast Baptist visits Vallejo on Thursday, November 7.
West Coast Baptist was scheduled to face the Keelhaulers on October 29, 2021, in CSUM's first post-COVID basketball game that also doubled as the Frank Dye Classic's opener. Since members of WCB tested positive for the virus on the day of the Keelhaulers' 2021-22 season opener, that event was cancelled that afternoon.
After its home opener, Cal Maritime will face a quick turnaround since it returns to action Saturday night in Klamath Falls, Oregon, in the first road game of the season. The Keelhaulers will face Oregon Tech, a team that split its first pair of games last week at the Carroll Classic by defeating Providence in its season opener before falling to the tournament hosts.
Saturday is the Owls' home opener and the first of two non-conference matchups against Cal Pac foes.
This year's CSUM squad provides second-year head coach Colin Johnson with a dangerous mix of returning talent and newcomers filled with potential and excitement to don a Cal Maritime uniform for the first time in their respective careers.
Of the 16 players on roster, eight played for the Keelhaulers last season: Daniel Andreyev, All-Cal Pac Second Team selection Lucky Hampton, DJ Henry, Aidan Kwan, Alex Maze, DeAndre Minor, Jake Matteson and Illyaas Rafiq.
That is a group laden with leadership and playing experience since five of those eight are seniors.
