DeAndre Minor’s heads-up play leads to buzzer-beating layup
VALLEJO, Calif. – Trailing by as many as seven points in Monday's non-conference game at PEAC Main Gym, Cal Maritime successfully cut it that deficit to four points with 2:57 remaining and battled to a 62-62 tie with 31 seconds remaining against Stanton.
Holding for the last possession — only a couple seconds separated the shot and game clock — Stanton wisely let the clock wind down but buckled under the Keelhaulers' suffocating defense when Mehmet Ertugrul Asik stepped out of bounds.
With Cal Maritime facing an opportunity of its own to win at the buzzer, Alex Maze created a solid look to provide the perfect ending for CSUM. Even though his shot missed to the right, DeAndre Minor snuck in to grab the rebound and took a shot as quickly as possible, knowing the game entered the final second.
His layup ended up being the difference in a hard-fought game because the ball left his fingertips moments before the buzzer sounded; once his layup gently fell through the net, CSUM officially earned the win, defeating Stanton 64-62.
A game tied at 62 ended in a #dub for @CalMaritimeMBB because it competed for ALL. 40. MINUTES. Nice layup, DeAndre Minor! #GoKeelhaulers @Cal_Maritime @Cal_Pac pic.twitter.com/oZ6o1yaEnj

Cal Maritime seeks a sweep of this week's three scheduled games, an opportunity that will present itself Friday night at West Coast Baptist. With a win, the Keelhaulers will sweep the season series since they defeated the Eagles at PEAC Main Gym, 135-76 (setting a new program record for most points scored in a game), in the team's 2024-25 season opener.
