VALLEJO, Calif. — Currently undefeated at home this season, Cal Maritime will look to keep its unblemished record intact when Mount Vernon Nazarene, a university based in Ohio, visits campus for the Keelhaulers' final home event of 2024 Saturday afternoon.
Tipoff inside PEAC Main Gym is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Even though this is men's basketball's last home game before the start of Cal Pac Conference action — its next home event is the Cal Pac opener vs. UC Merced on January 16 — the team still has three games left on its schedule before everyone turns the calendar to 2025: a neutral-site contest vs. Tabor on December 21 at Nelson University-Arizona's home court, a road game against the Warriors two days later and an exhibition event at UC Davis on the 28th.
Coming off a thrilling buzzer-beating layup from DeAndre Minor in their previous home game vs. Stanton, the Keelhaulers can capture their fourth win in a row by topping the Cougars this weekend in the inaugural game between the two in the program's written history.
Mount Vernon Nazarene's Norther California road swing includes stops at Pacific Union Friday afternoon and Simpson on Monday — coincidentally, both of those games tip at 3 p.m. — before returning to Mount Vernon, Ohio, for a two-week holiday hiatus.
Junior Trent Koning and graduate student Bailey Conrad lead a young MVNU roster — of the 13 members, eight are underclassmen: six are freshmen (four true and two redshirt) and another two are sophomores — in scoring at 18.8 and 14.8 points per game, respectively. Combined, the pair is responsible for 42.5 percent of the Cougars' offense.
In last week's sweep of its three games played, Illyaas Rafiq scored a combined 41 points, posted seven assists and another seven steals to capture Cal Pac Offensive Player of the Week honors — the first Keelhaulers to win this weekly accolade since December 5, 2022, when league officials recognized Miles Pennington.
Minor collected a total of 22 rebounds, the most important following a missed shot to sink that game-winner in the program's first-ever game vs. Stanton.
A win will give Cal Maritime its first four-game win streak since January 21-February 5, 2023, when it defeated six straight conference opponents and eventually secured a berth in the Cal Pac's year-end postseason tournament.
