VALLEJO, Calif. – Trailing by five with 1:38 remaining in Saturday's game at Covered Wagon in Angwin, Jamal Frenchwood connected from three to make it a one-basket game against Pacific Union with plenty of time remaining in regulation.
Following missed baskets by both teams on ensuing possessions, a foul by the Pioneers' Kyle Durham sent Lawrence Long to the free throw line. Sank both shots, tied the game at 80, and neither team scored another point for the rest of the second half as CSUM's 5-0 run forced its first overtime game of the year.
Jake Matteson recorded the first field goal of the extra session and recorded another four points following a layup from Frenchwood to give the Keelhaulers an 89-84 lead with 2:43 left to play.
The Pioneers never came closer to erasing their deficit until they made a layup with 23 seconds on the clock, but Illyaas Rafiq responded with a pair of free throws of his own to seal the win for Cal Maritime in a Cal Pac Conference matchup that ended with score of 95-89.
Frenchwood Long, DeAndre Minor and Drew Fischer led the Keelhaulers with 22, 15, 11 and 10 points apiece, respectively, and Matteson scored all seven of his points in overtime to help extend his team's win streak at Pacific Union to six in a row.
This complete team effort is the perfect way to end the first round of league matchups and gives Cal Maritime momentum heading into the back half of its conference season, one that starts Thursday at 7:30 inside PEAC Main against Simpson.
