Sailing finishes fifth and 10th at Jeff Simon Memorial Regatta
SAN DIEGO – Competing in a crowded field in the Jeff Simon Memorial Regatta at Mission Bay Yacht Club, Cal Maritime captured a top-five and top-10 result in this UC San Diego-hosted regatta when the Keelhaulers' second team and first teams placed fifth and 10th, respectively.
Cal Maritime-2 experienced a tough start by placing 18th in its inaugural race of the weekend — tough for CSUM's standards but not devastating since 40 teams were competing in San Diego this weekend — but finished strong by posing a pair of ninth-place results before it B boat ended the final race of the event in second.
Cal Maritime-1 first two races saw it cross the line 15th in the team's opening race and post a DNS in its next race; by crossing the finish line third in a subsequent race and finishing fourth in two of the last three rounds, CSUM jumped up the results board to earn an overall finish within the top 10.
Sailing will head to Morro Bay, California next weekend to defend its Mustang Open Team Race title. Cal Poly will host this two-day event on February 1 and 2 at the Morro Bay Yacht Club.
