Cal Maritime sweeps Central California regattas by winning Mustang Open
MORRO BAY, Calif. – During February's first weekend, Cal Maritime visited Morro Bay to participate in the Mustang Open Team Race and successfully defended its regatta championship. That was the second of five competitions in as many consecutive weeks for the Keelhaulers.
This weekend, sailing returned to Morro Bay Yacht Club to finish one of the most grueling portions of the program's schedule to compete in the second of two events hosted by Cal Poly, the Mustang Open.
Cal Maritime looked as if it came off a well-timed break, not a five-week stretch of non-stop action with the way it raced against the other 14 teams because sailing not only won this weekend's regatta, it dominated the entire weekend winning the Mustang Open by 13 points over Cal Poly, the event's runner-up.
Solid conditions laid the ground work for the Keelhaulers' dominating performance: very light and variable winds took place throughout Saturday with a slightly stronger breeze visiting the coast Sunday until just afternoon before ending racing with very light variable winds. A big current took place both days, in both directions; combined with the light winds, this combination created challenging conditions.
Representing CSUM's A team, Nick Mueller responded to this challenge by ending Saturday's racing with three first-place results in a row and returned to the water on Sunday to continue his stellar sailing with another three-consecutive bullets.
Responsible for the lowest score by any A or B boat from any of the 15 teams in this weekend's field, Mueller's 12 points was 25 points lower compared to the nearest competitor.
With the entire program off next week, Cal Maritime's offshore team will head to Southern California for the annual Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup. This three-day
