Stellar start continues for sailing with second-place finish in San Diego

SAN DIEGO – Even though 24 boats competed at the UCSD Open, hosted by UC San Diego at Mission Bay Yacht Club, it quickly became a two-boat competition between USC and Cal Maritime throughout the entire weekend.

Of the 18 combined races between A and B Division crews throughout the nine rounds that took place, Cal Maritime won three, finished within the top three in nine races and part of the top five in 13 to finish second behind the Trojans, a team that crossed the line first in nine races throughout the weekend.

Even though three schools were within striking distance of USC following Saturday's racing, only the Keelhaulers possessed the grit and talent to push USC throughout the entire weekend as UC Santa Cruz' and Cal's second team quickly faded behind the top two as Sunday's schedule progressed.

Tied with the Trojans entering the third round, Cal Maritime kept a stranglehold on second place throughout the rest of the weekend and became the only threat to knock USC out from the top spot on the leaderboard for the rest of the weekend.

A busy month with competitions each weekend continues in Richmond at the Stoney Burke Intersectional, hosted by Richmond Yacht Club, on Saturday.
