Sailing destroys Stoney Burke field to win varsity regatta; JV crew secures second place

RICHMOND, Calif. – If the last two weeks offer a glimpse into the rest of the 2025-26 season, sailing has a new rivalry.

Last week, Cal Maritime turned in a performance that would have won any regatta, if it were not for USC simply winning more individual races to capture a regatta victory.

This past weekend, roles reversed as Cal Maritime won the first individual race of the Stoney Burke Intersectional and never looked back as it won the event by a 20-point margin over the Trojans and 39 points against Cal, the regatta's host and third-place team.

Of the 16 races that took place throughout the weekend in Richmond, Cal Maritime won half of them; it posted 13 top-two race results, finished within the top three in all but one race and ended Saturday's racing with a 14-point lead through eight races.

If there was one school that owned Stoney Burke, it was Cal Maritime: While the varsity crew raced out to the regatta's championship and ensure no team came within striking distance after the first round of racing, the Keelhaulers' JV team finished second behind UC Santa Cruz.

The Keelhaulers' JV crew won five of the first eight races before the Banaba Slugs stormed back to take the title from the Keelhaulers by winning or finishing second in five of the last seven races.

Give UCSC credit for the way it finished the event, but it would not have captured the JV title without a couple results, throughout that same timespan, that saw the Keelhaulers finish 13th twice and only post one top-two result and three top-five finishes to end the weekend.

Cal Maritime's busy month will continue in Redwood City on October 25 and 26 at the Women's Fall PCCSC Championship and Top-9 Invite, hosted by Stanford at the Arrillaga Family Rowing and Sailing Center.
