VALLEJO, Calif. – Off since December 12 when it hosted Southern Oregon in the final game of its home tournament, Cal Maritime will return to action this week for its inaugural Cal Pac contests of the season, starting with Thursday's 5:30 p.m. against Westcliff. Two days later, the Keelhaulers will wrap-up its inaugural set of league tilts when Saint Katherine visits PEAC Main Gym for Saturday's 1 p.m. event.
Due to COVID protocols, women's basketball's first five conference contests were postponed.
Excited to finally return to competition, the Keelhaulers' league opener includes a Westcliff team that won its last three straight, a group of results that included victories in its non-conference finale versus Bethesda, and conference games at home against La Sierra and at Saint Katherine — the Warriors' inaugural Cal Pac games in program history.
In last week's league action, senior forward Bailey Hawkins posted a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds and followed that performance with a 23 and 10 effort two days later against the Firebirds. Highlighted by her 77 percent overall shooting clip at Saint Katherine, Cal Pac officials bestowed Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors to Hawkins on Monday.
Since its January 20 game at Pacific Union was postponed, Saint Katherine's lone game on its Northern California road trip is set for Saturday in Vallejo.
In last Saturday's Cal Pac opener, the Firebirds fell to Westcliff by 18 points in the team's second game played since encountering a long hiatus of its own. Following its final game of 2021 versus Park University Gilbert, Saint Katherine's next official contest did not take place until January 13.
With losses in three of their last four games — that matchup on the 13th ended with a victory over Bethesda — USK's game against the Keelhaulers precedes the toughest portion of its schedule, one that includes three games in five days.
