VALLEJO, Calif. – The final two opponents of women's basketball's season-opening six-game homestand will visit PEAC Main Gym this weekend when Saint Katherine and Westcliff square off against the Keelhaulers on Thursday and Saturday. Tipoff for Cal Maritime's inaugural set of Cal Pac Conference games will take place at 5:30 p.m. each evening.
Off since its pre-Thanksgiving non-conference matchup against UC Santa Cruz, which took place on November 20, Cal Maritime will face the league's fourth- and fifth-place teams during the opening weekend of conference play.
With five of its first six games of the year played at home, Saint Katherine will enter Thursday's matchup with a 5-1 overall record after starting the season with a pair of victories against SAGU American Indian College, Life Pacific, Bethesda and San Diego Christian College. The Firebirds' lone blemish took place in its last game, played last Tuesday at home against Hope International.
Unlike the Keelhaulers, whose roster features zero seniors, five are part of USK's program this season.
PEAC Main Gym is a familiar location for Saint Katherine since it visited campus in January for last season's series finale and a handful of weeks later as one of six teams that participated in the Cal Pacific Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.
Led by senior guard Olivia Rojas and her 12.3 points per game average, two Firebirds average double figures six games into the season. The other is junior guard Precious Masters, who currently averages 11.3 ppg.
The Firebirds and Warriors will face a Cal Maritime squad led by junior forward Alicia Porter, the league's top scorer and rebounder at 28.3 ppg and 13.5 rpg.
Expect a shootout on Saturday when Westcliff, a 2022 NAIA Women's Basketball Tournament (and Cal Pac Tournament) participant faces CSUM since the Cal Pac's No. 2-ranked scorer is a Warrior. After her first four games, senior guard Trinity Vasquez' 24.0 ppg figure is nearly double that of her team's second-ranked scorer, junior guard Valisa Millhouse, who averages 12.3 ppg.
Just over one month after its season started, CSUM will compete in its first road game of the season when everyone makes the brief trek to Angwin for next Thursday's 6 p.m. matchup.
