VALLEJO, Calif. — Cal Maritime is still riding a wave of momentum following last weekend's record-setting 31-point victory into this weekend's road game, the first one of the 2024-25 season, at UC Santa Cruz.
Tipoff at KP Arena, located off campus near downtown Santa Cruz, is set for 2 p.m.
When the Keelhaulers return home, it will prep for its next matchup — the first of three exhibition games on this year's slate — when they host California Tribal College Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
Entering the week in second place in the Cal Pac's standings, numerous Keelhaulers are ranked within the top five in a variety of statistical categories.
Aysia Santos and Jameelah Pharms are ranked No. 4 and No. 5 in scoring at 14.5 and 14.0 points per game; Santos is one of three players ranked in three-point percentage as she is shooting at a 30 percent clip, the fourth-highest figure in the league.
Alina Daffon's 40 percent success rate from downtown rake her third Jaz Novelli is tied with her teammate, Santos, with her percentage of threes made in her inaugural season at CSUM.
Pharms and Novelli enter the week ranked second and third in total rebounds with 10 and nine, respectively, with the former leading the league in steals (9) as well.
The league's top four assist leaders all represent CSUM: Led by Kai Kraus with seven, Novelli (6), Addison Alsbury (5) and Pharms (4) look to continue their unselfish ways against a Banana Slug squad competing in its inaugural game of the season.
Even though UCSC won seven of the nine games played in Santa Cruz, the offensive firepower, defensive prowess and overall potential of this Cal Maritime team give it a strong chance to win their first head-to-head road game since February 15, 2011.
November's lone home event will celebrate Native American Heritage Night — senior forward Dylan Fulton's family proudly includes Native American ancestry — when it hosts California Tribal College for the first time in program history>
Located on the campus California State University, Sacramento, California Tribal College's partnership will provide post-secondary educational opportunities for Native and non-Native students.
Courses and programs, grounded in the CTC's mission "to provide relevant, high-quality workforce and post-secondary education to the Tribal communities of California" will strengthen and uphold Tribal sovereignty, empower tribal leadership, cultivate tribal youth leadership, and help students attain Tribal cultural and language enrichment through rigorous curricula.
Once that game concludes, the Keelhaulers will play its final four games of the month on the road. Starting with a November 12 game at Academy of Art. The team will head to Klamath Falls, Oregon, to face Southern Oregon (Nov. 15) and Oregon Tech (Nov. 16) before playing Lincoln (CA) at the College of Alameda on November 20.
