
Wallace's golden goal, W vs. Cal highlight inaugural weekend of the 2025 season

VALLEJO, Calif. - Cal Maritime opened its 2025 season as they hosted the CWPA Tournament #1 at PEAC Pool. The tournament featured four local universities from NCAA Division I and II levels. The Keelhaulers went 2-2 in the four games played.
The Keelhaulers went 1-1 on Saturday defeating NCAA Division I member UC Davis, 8-7, and lost 12-5 to NCAA Division II school Chico State, 12-5. On Sunday, the CSUM lost 9-7 to Cal (A) and won 6-4 over Cal (B).
On Saturday against UC Davis, the Aggies would jump out to a 3-1 advantage after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Cal Maritime would score four unanswered goals and would take a 5-3 lead. The Aggies would tie the match at 5-5 headed into halftime. The teams would trade goals until late in the match. In the fourth quarter, Cate Anderson would have a save in a one-on-one possession for the Aggies. In the ensuing possession for the Keelhaulers, Ryan Wallace would score the match-winner with 22 seconds left in regulation. In the afternoon match, the Wildcats would not trail as they won 12-5.
On Sunday, in the morning match against Cal (A), the Keelhaulers would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The Golden Bears would get back into the match and would take the lead with 4:56 left in the third quarter. The Golden Bears won 9-7. In the afternoon match against Cal (B), CSUM held a slim advantage throughout the game. Cal Maritime gained their largest lead of the match at three, at 4-1, on a Wallace tally with 3:43 left in the second quarter. The Golden Bears would then score three unanswered goals to tie the game at 4-4 with 4:14 left in the fourth quarter. Meghan Abbott would score the final two goals of the game to give the Keelhaulers a 6-4 victory.
Cal Maritime will hit the road to Davis for the second CWPA Tournament of the season. The Keelhaulers will take on the homestanding Aggies and the Nevada on Saturday, February 22, and on Sunday, February 23, CSUM will have a rematch with Chico State and Cal (A).
