VALLEJO, Calif. — A home-heavy league slate starts Thursday for Cal Maritime when it starts the second round of Cal Pac Conference play against Simpson. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. inside PEAC Main Gym. Two days later, the Keelhaulers will complete a rare home-road weekend schedule by traveling to UC Merced for Saturday's 4 p.m. clash.
Starting with its home game against the Red Hawks, four of CSUM's last five league games will take place on campus, giving the Keelhaulers a strong advantage, as it winds down the season, to capture one of four available berths at this year's Cal Pac Conference Men's Basketball Championship.
Entering this week's schedule in fourth place, Cal Maritime would clinch a spot for postseason play if the regular season ended today. However, the regular season concluded on February 22, which makes every game against a conference foe an important one as the year winds down.
Simpson will travel to Vallejo in fifth place, one game behind the Keelhaulers in the Cal Pac standings, seeking a split of the season series after CSUM defeated it in Redding for the first time since January 26, 2019. If Cal Maritime sweeps the Red Hawks, it will accomplish the feat for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
The final Cal Pac road game of the season will send the Keelhaulers to Merced to battle the first-place Bobcats.
Undefeated in league play so far this season, UC Merced will look to keep its five-game Cal Pac win streak intact against Pacific Union Thursday night and CSUM on Saturday.
Merced is turning out to become a tough place to play this year because UCM holds a 7-1 record on its home court this season with the lone loss taking place last November against No. 7 Montana Tech.
This weekend also provides an exciting opportunity for the Keelhaulers because the Bobcats won the last four head-to-head matchups but split the last two played at the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation & Wellness Center.
