Cal Maritime secures first head-to-head victory vs. Lincoln (CA)

ALAMEDA, Calif. -  The Keelhaulers wrapped up their five-game road trip when they faced Lincoln University (CA) in Alameda, at College of Alameda, Wednesday night. Junior Jaz Novelli scored a game-high 29 points as Cal Maritime recorded its first win over the Oaklanders in program history, 84-78.

In the first quarter, neither team would gain a lead larger than three. The Keelhaulers' three point lead came at 7-4 with 5:24 left, on a Novelli layup. The Oaklanders would then go on a 6-0 run, capped by a Senaida Barrientos layup, which led to their largest lead of the quarter at 10-7.

The Oaklanders led 17-15 at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Keelhaulers opened the quarter on a 6-0 run, capped by a Dylan Fulton three with 8:56 left in the half, to take a 21-17 lead. After the Oaklanders tied the game at 21-21, the Keelhaulers would go on a 10-2 run, capped by a Addison Alsbury three pointer with 5:41 left, to take a 31-23 lead. Lincoln (CA) would respond with a 10-3 run, capped by a Teulia Tuiasosopo jumper with 2:48 left, to cut CSUM's lead to one at 34-33.

The Keelhaulers would lead 42-38 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the two teams would play at a back-and-forth pace. Lincoln (CA) started the half on a 12-6 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Jaslyn Woods, to take the lead at 50-48 with 6:26 left. The Keelhaulers would take the lead for good at 56-53 on a three-pointer by Novelli with 3:11 left in the quarter. The Keelhaulers would gain their largest lead of the quarter at 64-57 on a pair of free throws by Novelli with 50 seconds left in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Cal Maritime kept Oaklanders at arms' length. The Oaklanders would come as close as two on two occasions, but CSUM responded with a 12-4 run, capped by a Novelli three with 3:07 left, to gain their largest lead of the night at 10.

After the Oaklanders cut the lead to six, at 82-76, Novelli connected on a jumper after a miss by Jameelah Pharms, to give the Keelhaulers a 84-76 with 30 seconds left. Barrientos would make a layup with nine seconds left to trim the lead to 84-78, but the Oaklanders would come no closer.

Novelli hit 11 field goals including five three-pointers. Pharms recorded 15 and Dylan Fulton added another 11 points for the Keelhaulers in the victory. Barrientos scored 19 to lead the Oaklanders. 

The Keelhaulers shot .469 pct. (30-for-64) from the field, .366 (15-for-41) from the three-point line and were .643 (9-for-14) from the free throw line. The Oaklanders shot .517 (31-for-60) from the field, .500 (6-for-12) from the three-point line and .556 (10-for 18) from the foul line.

Cal Maritime forced 19 turnovers and only committed 12. it outrebounded the Oaklanders, 40-32, which included a 12-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Keelhaulers also outscored Lincoln (CA)'s bench, 18-9.

Now entering a 12-day respite, CSUM's next game is December 2nd when it hosts Dominican University (CA) at PEAC Main Gym. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
