CSUM's second-half surge nearly erases halftime deficit
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Trailing 48-33 at halftime, Cal Maritime nearly erased that deficit in the latter portion of the second half and pulled within two possessions on a layup from Angelo Nicandro with 4:21 left to play. By making their free throws throughout the last minute of Saturday's game in Riverside, California, La Sierra scored six of the game's last eight points to pull away and defeat Cal Maritime, 91-78.
DJ Henry scored double figures for the second time in as many games; not only did he set a new career high by knocking down 7 of 10 shots from the floor, he connected on all six of his free throws to end his night with a career-high 20 points.
Illyaas Rafiq also set a new pair of career highs by scoring 15 points and recording all four of his field goals from three.
By connecting on 5 of 8 shots from the floor, DeAndre Minor added another 10 points to finish with his fifth double-figure total of the season.
Cal Maritime outrebounded the Golden Eagles by three overall and six on the offensive glass, which led to 16 second chance points. The Keelhaulers' bench outscored LSU's reserves, 37-25, and scored 12 more points in the paint (34-22) compared to the Golden Eagles.
But it was a 14-2 LSU scoring run in the first half that helped it build a 17-point lead entering the final minutes of the half that eventually led to the game's final result.
Even though the Keelhaulers fought valiantly throughout the second half and pulled within two possessions, they simply ran out of time and were forced to send the Golden Eagles to the line to stop the clock throughout the last minute of the game.
Cal Maritime will head to Angwin, California, for Tuesday's rivalry game against Pacific Union with a 1-12 overall and 1-5 Cal Pac record. La Sierra will continue its season with records of 5-9 and 4-2.
